This unit plan covers Using Credit in personal finance for grades 7-12.

 

Unit Objectives:

  • Students will be able to analyze and research types of insurance, retirement, and tips for choosing the right plan. 

  • Students will understand savings, savings accounts, and types of savings plans.

  • Students will be able to have knowledge of types of investments, investment plans, costs of investments, and the stock market. 

  • Through discussion and research, students will understand the time value of money and tools for retirement and insurance.

  • With demonstrations and applications, students will know how to calculate simple and compound interest.

Students will be able to:

  • Describe motivations for saving and the means by which they save

  • Identify the opportunity costs of saving

  • Differentiate between saving and investing

  • Compare simple and compound interest

  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various savings and investing plans

  • Identify the risk/return trade-offs for saving and investing

  • Apply criteria for choosing a savings or investment instrument (e.g., market risk, inflation risk, interest rate risk, political risk, liquidity, and minimum amount needed for investment)

  • Differentiate between interest, dividends, capital gains, and rent from property

  • Identify costs for investments

  • Identify income sources for investments

  • Examine the role of saving and investing in creating a financial plan

  • Develop financial goals for the future based on one’s lifestyle expectations and career choices

  • Explain how and why the stock market functions

  • Apply the concept of Time Value of Money
